Episode 949
Migration and Promise: The Journey of Faith Acts 7:1-8
This podcast episode delves into the profound themes of migration and faith, particularly as illustrated through the narrative of Abraham's journey in Acts 7:1-8. We examine how Stephen recounts Abraham's migration, emphasizing the complexities and sacredness of such journeys within the broader context of contemporary global displacement and the refugee crisis. The discussion serves as a poignant reminder that migration is intricately woven into our sacred stories, highlighting the divine presence among those who traverse borders seeking safety and belonging. Additionally, we confront the concept of promise without possession, challenging the notion that faith is inherently linked to immediate rewards or territorial claims. Our reflections ultimately inspire a call to action, urging listeners to engage with local immigrant and refugee communities and consider how their stories resonate with our own sacred narratives.
The narrative unfolds with a profound examination of migration as a sacred journey, deeply rooted in the historical context of biblical figures such as Abraham. Through the lens of Acts 7:1-8, the conversation delves into the theological implications of Abraham's departure from Mesopotamia, underscoring the divine calling that prompted him to traverse unfamiliar territories. This discussion illuminates the multifaceted nature of migration, emphasizing that it is not merely a physical displacement but a spiritual odyssey that resonates with contemporary issues surrounding refugees and immigrants. We contemplate how these ancient stories of faith and movement continue to echo in our modern realities, urging us to recognize the sanctity of those who seek refuge and the inherent dignity of their journeys. Furthermore, we explore the tension between the promise of a future blessing and the current state of being 'footloose,' illustrating that faith may often require a relinquishment of immediate gratification in exchange for a more profound understanding of divine purpose and justice, extending beyond individual existence into the broader narrative of community and liberation.

Speaker A:Here's Today's reading from Acts 7:1:8 Reading.
Speaker B:From the message Stephen Full of the Holy Spirit Then the chief priest said, what do you have to do to save for yourself?
Speaker B:Stephen replied, Friends, fathers and brothers, the God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was still in Mesopotamia before the move to Haran and told him, leave your country and family and go to the land that I'll show you.
Speaker B:So he left the country of the Chaldees and moved to Haran.
Speaker B:After the death of his father, he immigrated to this country where you now live.
Speaker B:But God gave him nothing, not so much as a foothold.
Speaker B:He did promise to give the country to him and his son later on, even though Abraham had no son at the time, God let him know that his offspring would move to an alien country where they would be enslaved and brutalized for 400 years.
Speaker B:But God said, I will step in and take care of those slaveholders and bring my people out so they can worship me in this place.
Speaker B:Then he made a covenant with him and signed it in Abraham's flesh by circumcision.
Speaker B:When Abraham had his son Isaac, within eight days he reproduced the sign of circumcision in him.
Speaker B:Isaac became father of Jacob and Jacob, father of 12 fathers, each faithfully passing on the covenant sign.
Speaker B:Well, in today's reflection, my good friends, we're exploring Stephen's recounting of of the Abraham story, which is a narrative of all about migration and promise and the complexities of COVID Let's talk about some points to ponder.
Speaker B:The first has to do with sacred migration stories, and Stephen begins his defense by telling a migration story Abraham, responding to divine calling, became becomes an immigrant twice over.
Speaker B:First to Haran, then to Canaan.
Speaker B:In our current context of global migration and refugee crises, this reminds us that displacement and movement are woven into our sacred stories.
Speaker B:The divine often speaks through those who cross borders and seek new homes as refugees.
Speaker B:And there's the promise without possession.
Speaker B:The Bible text specifically notes that God gave him nothing, not so much as a foothold.
Speaker B:This challenges prosperity gospel narratives and reminds us that faith isn't about immediate reward or territorial claims.
Speaker B:Instead, it's about participating in a larger story of liberation and justice that may extend beyond our own lifetime.
Speaker B:Another point is about going beyond blood and borders.
Speaker B:This passage mentions circumcision as a covenant sign in progressive theology.
Speaker B:This invites us to look deeper into what covenant means today.
Speaker B:Rather than focusing on physical markers or bloodlines, we might ask how do we embody covenant through working for justice, welcoming the stranger, or caring for our common home?
Speaker B:For our common home.
Speaker B:Let's talk about an action step.
Speaker B:Learn about migration and immigration stories in your own community.
Speaker B:Connect with local immigrant rights organization or some refugee support group and listen to firsthand accounts of modern migration, immigration journeys and consider how these modern day contemporary stories connect with our sacred story, our sacred text, and how that might be calling us to action.
Speaker B:We're going to come back with a closing prayer here in just a minute.
Speaker B:I always want to share with you that we have a resource for you.

Speaker B:We remember that our sacred stories are filled with people on the move, seeking safety, following promise.
Speaker B:Open our hearts to those crossing borders today.
Speaker B:Help us challenge systems that create displacement and give us courage to welcome the stranger.
Speaker B:May we see your presence in every migration story, every immigration story, and every hope for home.
Speaker B:In solidarity and love we pray.
